DOMESTIC FUEL CRISIS DEEPENS: PETROL BREACHES ₹102 IN DELHI AFTER FOURTH SHARP HIKE IN 10 DAYS

OMCs End Retail Price Freeze as Global Import Basket Soars to $108 Per Barrel; Mumbai Consumers Paying Historic ₹111.21 Per Liter

By Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Millions of commuters and businesses woke up to severe financial strain this morning as domestic Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) executed a sharp, fourth consecutive fuel price hike in less than two weeks. The latest revision pushed petrol past the critical ₹102-per-liter mark in the national capital, while retailing at an unprecedented ₹110+ in Bengaluru and ₹111.21 in Mumbai.

The continuous price escalation ends a prolonged retail price freeze that state-run retailers maintained to buffer local markets. According to senior energy analysts, OMCs like Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL were absorbing collective daily operational losses estimated at over ₹1,000 crore as geopolitical tensions in West Asia sent international crude prices surging. With India relying on imports for over 85% of its crude requirements, the domestic pricing structure finally buckled under market pressure.

The cascading impact is already being felt across secondary sectors. Transport unions nationwide have raised red flags over rising operational costs, warning of an imminent freight rate hike. Economists project that a sustained increase in diesel prices will immediately drive up the wholesale and retail costs of essential commodities, including fresh vegetables, milk, and food grains, within the week.

Opposition parties have called for immediate relief, demanding a structural reduction in central excise duties and state-level Value Added Taxes (VAT). However, Finance Ministry sources hint that immediate tax cuts remain unlikely until the global energy supply chain stabilizes.

NUCLEAR NON-PROLIFERATION REVIEW ENDS WITHOUT CONSENSUS AT UN HEADQUARTERS

NEW YORK: The 11th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) concluded its intense four-week session at the United Nations Headquarters without reaching a consensus on a final joint declaration. Disagreements among major global powers over disarmament timelines and current active geopolitical conflicts prevented a unified text, raising concerns among non-proliferation watchdogs about a renewed global arms race.

WHO ISSUES URGENT CALL FOR PANDEMIC PREPAREDNESS AT WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY

GENEVA: World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus closed the 79th World Health Assembly with an urgent appeal to global health ministers, citing recent localized outbreaks of Ebola and hantaviruses. The WHO chief emphasized that the global health infrastructure remains deeply vulnerable to rapidly spreading infectious pathogens and urged member nations to finalize binding pandemic preparedness treaties.

THE FUEL TAX DILEMMA

The current surge in retail fuel prices underlines India's deep economic vulnerability to external energy shocks. While the structural drivers are undeniably geopolitical—centered heavily around maritime security risks in West Asia—the domestic response cannot rely solely on passing the burden down to the retail consumer. The cascading inflationary effect of expensive diesel threatens to choke the post-winter recovery of manufacturing and discretionary spending.

To prevent structural inflation from hardening, both the Central government and State administrations must coordinate a temporary, staggered reduction in fuel taxes. Treating fuel revenue as an fiscal cushion during a global supply shock risks suppressing domestic consumption, which remains the primary engine of macroeconomic growth.
